Tonight I went to Matt Wertz's concert at The Social in Downtown Orlando. This is the third time I've seen Matt in about 2 years. Every single time has been amazing. He's incredible talented, has great stage presence, and is just really passionate about what he does. Plus, he's one of many artists who supports The Mocha Club which I believe is doing amazing work for the people of Africa.
Of all the songs Matt sang tonight, I think this one is my favorite. It may not be as catchy, melodious, or lyrically intriguing as the rest of his music, but it speaks volumes. It speaks the truth of Christ in such a simple way to understand. While Matt is a Christian, he's not particularly known as a Christian artist, which is awesome. Because at his concert tonight were people of all walks of life. Those people heard these truths. The truth of the Gospel. Whether they realize it or not, the seed has been planted. Hopefully someone someday will share with them about the Great Lover whose love will never be taken away.
Anyway, enjoy the lyrics and if Matt is ever in your town, be sure to hit up his concert. In the meantime, check out The Mocha Club. Give $7 a month. Be Love to the people of Africa. It's easy.

Concert Review--Ingrid Michaelson
Wednesday night Rebekah and I went to the Ingrid Michaelson concert at The Social (as we battled torrential downpours...all for the sake of music). It seems as thought each concert I goes to gets better and better. I was a bit skeptical that Ingrid would be the type that would sit on her stool with her guitar and just sing all of her songs. Wrong. She was hilarious! And incredibly talented. She played the piano, guitar, and banjo. She was telling jokes and interacting with the crowd. She seemed so laid back. She played some new songs that she's written and they are even better than her first album. I'm looking forward to her new album coming out.
The opener, Greg Laswell, was also very talented. I enjoyed his piano skills as well. Annnnd, he did a great cover. Of...wait for it. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Awesome. Seriously. Good stuff. I was talking to one of Rebekah's friends that was with us and she said she discovered Greg on NPR. Rebekah and I were both pretty amazed by this. I checked out NPR's website (National Public Radio, incase you didn't get that) and they seriously have a great music site. They do radio segments on undiscovered artists and music worth considering. Loooove it. So many new artists and music for me to check out! Ahhh how I love music.
Unfortunately, it appears as though my concert-going schedule won't be so packed in the next few weeks. I was supposed to volunteer as part of the Mocha Club at Ginny Owens concert in Lakeland next week, but Mocha Club isn't going to be there anymore (although the concert is still on). I don't think I'll make the trek out to Lakeland for the concert now. And, the 2 concerts I really wanted to go to in July are both while I have visitors in town, so I likely won't be going to those either. But, August will be here before I know it and that means John Mayer and OneRepublic!!
Anyhow, check out Ingrid and Greg. They're good. Oh, and apparently some group called Black Dice did a remix of Ingrid's song--the sweater one. She was trying to tell us how it went (including rapping). It was funny. I'll probably check out the remix.

Concert Review--Between the Trees
A little late coming, but here it is.
Friday Rebekah and I went to the Between the Trees concert at House of Blues (HOB). This time, I liked the venue a bit better. We decided to take advantage of the skip the line option again by eating dinner at HOB. It's good. Slightly overpriced, but good.
We then got in line. And waited...with a bunch of teeny boppers. Hahaha. Seriously. Between the Trees has a pretty young following, so we were in the minority with our 21 and over wristbands. When we got into the venue, we found the perfect location. 2 bar stools right behind the main floor. They were really really good seats. All the teeny boppers crowded the main floor area. There were 3 opening acts. "Dang, We're on Fire" was the first act. I didn't enjoy them. At all. I felt like the guy couldn't sing at all. He was just talking/screaming into the mic. But I do have to say they have a pretty sweet name. I wanted to like them so I could tell people "Hey, have you heard of this sweet band? Yeah, they're name is 'Dang, We're on Fire'." Just sounds cool.
Anyhow, I didn't think I'd like the second opener, but I actually really enjoyed them. Cori Yarckin (sp?) was really good. They have a female lead singer (which isn't all that common, but interesting, for sure). She was really entertaining and had a really great voice. The last opener was "Rookie of the Year" and they were really great. Rebekah bought the cd and I've listened to it today and like them even more since the show. They have a cool punk, rock, singer/songwriter sound. Intriguing. Their song "Liars and Battlelines" is good. So check them out. I said so.
Between the Trees finally came on and I have to say, they put on a phenomenal show. They did this whole acoustic set in the middle of their show and I loved, loved, loooooved it!!! They also covered a Journey song ("Don't Stop Believin") which I was EXTREMELY impressed with!!! They did GREAT. The guitar rift was incredible. The annoying part of the show: the teenyboppers seriously started moshing and crowd surfing. Seriously? Seriously. Definitely not that type of music. Anyway, I would go see Between the Trees again. I liked them!!!
Annnnd, just found out that Cartel will be here in July!! OH. MY. GOSH! But I can't go...major bummer.

Concert Review--OneRepublic w/ Dave Barnes
Tonight was the much anticipated OneRepublic w/ Dave Barnes concert. I met up with Rachel, Rebekah and Crystal at House of Blues for dinner so we could skip to the front of the line (it really is a pretty good deal...eat dinner there first and you get to skip the line. I like it!). After dinner we got in line and once inside the concert hall found a good location towards the back (we weren't really in the mood to fight off teeny boppers down in front so we hung out in the middle/back). My first reaction to this concert is that I don't really like the venue. There are some rather large pillars around the room that are annoying. And in all honesty, I don't think the acoustics are all that great there either. I'm probably just partial to The Social (mostly because it's a small, cheap venue and you can practically touch the artists performing on stage). I really just like the intimate feeling of The Social over the huge (I use this word loosely in this instance) venue of HOB.
Anyway, there were 2 other openers besides Dave Barnes. Ron somebody-or-other (obviously I wasn't all that impressed) and Dave Reeves. Dave Reeves was actually pretty good and I'll probably end up purchasing a song or two..maybe. When Dave Barnes came on I was so incredibly stoked. But unfortunately most of the people at the concert were there for OneRepublic and not Dave so they talked through most of Dave's set and we couldn't hear what he was singing or saying which is truly unfortunate because Dave is flat out hilarious. He only sang about 5 songs and none of them were really my favorites. I was kind of disappointed. :(
I was skeptical about OneRepublic's performance but they were really, really, really good!! The lead singer tore his ACL a while back so he had to sit the entire time (he plays piano too so really he sits a lot anyway), but suprisingly he was still extremely entertaining from his keester (as he referred to it). They literally played every song from their album EXCEPT the one I wanted them to! I really really really wanted to hear "Prodigal" and they didn't play it :( But the rest of their show was soooo goood. They are really great performers and the lead singer has one heck of a voice on him. I'd definitely go see them again...and I just might! They announced that they'll be back end of August with....JOHN MAYER!! (Alright, I know some people don't particulary enjoy John Mayer, but I like him--probably because of the high school memories it brings back--and I LOVE his new single! So good!). So in any case, tonight was pretty fun!
Oh, and we saw Between the Trees at the concert tonight. Rebekah and I are going to see them on Friday night and they were at tonight's show. Rachel wouldn't let me talk to them though. Hahaha. It was funny. Omigosh. I almost forgot the best part of the night. There was a crazy drunk (well, we hope he was drunk or else there's just no way to explain how ridiculous he was) in front of us the whole night. Now let's be honest, OneRepublic isn't really headbanging, jump-up-and-down type music. But this man was definitely doing both. And. He was singing. Off key. Off beat. He ran into so many people. And we were all dying laughing at him. He was completely oblivious. I laughed so hard I almost cried.
Anyhow...great night! By the way (or B-T-Dub as was coined tonight), the new Jason Mraz cd is out. Haven't listened yet, but I will soon, I'm sure. And I have no doubt I'll love it. He has a duet with Colbie Caliat that should be good. If he is ever in town (or near here) I would totally go see him. Love, love, LOOOOOVE Jason Mraz.

Music, makes the people, come together!
I love music far too much. Have I mentioned that a time or two before? I got a copy of the Augustana cd today from Rebekah today at church. I haven't stopped listening to it all day. I loooove it. My favorite songs are "Hey Now" and "Fire" and "Sweet and Low." What a fantastic band. Their live performance was incredible and their cd is nothing short of amazing.
Tonight I stopped at House of Blues to pick up OneRepublic tickets for tomorrow night. I'm soooo excited!! And I also purchased tickets for the Between the Trees concert on Friday night. Rebekah wanted to go and wasn't sure if she had anyone to go with and since she went with me to the Indelible Grace concert a while ago, I figured I owed her. Plus, I've been told by more than a few people that Between the Trees puts on a fantastic show, so I'm pretty excited.
So this week (like all the rest) will be pretty busy. OneRepublic/Dave Barnes tomorrow night, The Drive on Tuesday night, Chiropractor on Wednesday night, Small Group on Thursday night, and Between the Trees on Friday night.
Alright, time to get to bed. Early morning tomorrow!!

Short Version Concert Recap-Augustana
I'll fill in more later, but the Augustana concert last night was amazing!!! Their live performance is so incredibly good. They closed with a Bob Dylan cover that was crazy awesome--somewhat strange at points, but awesome. Five Times August was the opener and they were really good too. Definitely worth the money!!

And there's a pretty good possibility that I'll be at the Ingrid Michaelson concert. Between entering races and paying for concert/show tickets, no wonder I'm broke. Oh well. Only 5 more days until Dave & Matt!!!!! WAY excited!

Healthy Addiction, right?
So I have an addiction. There. I admitted it. That's the first step in the 12 step process, right? I have an addiction to music, and therefore, concerts. In the last 20 minutes I've purchased concert tickets for OneRepublic with Dave Barnes and Matt Wertz as well as 2 albums on iTunes. That's reasonable, right??? Lucky for me (not so lucky for my wallet) I have some friends that love music and concerts even more than I do, so finding someone to go to a concert I want to go to isn't very difficult. Even better, my friends have very similar tastes in music so they're usually the ones telling me what concerts are happening in the area. I couldn't ask for anything better. So, in less than a month, I will be seeing 2 of my absolute favorite singer/songwriters at House of Blues. Dave and Matt, I cannot wait until I see you again.
As for the 2 albums I purchased. One was OneRepublic and I'm going to see them in concert, so that is totally justifiable. The other was Tristan Prettyman. One of her songs, "Madly" was the free download of the week on iTunes and I loved it, so I purchased the whole album. It was only $5.99!! How could I pass that up?!? And iTunes, I have to give it to you. You really do have a pretty good taste in music most of the time. The free download of the week has introduced me to some pretty amazing artists. I believe it's where I first heard of Sara Bareilles waaaay before she hit it big...like almost a year ago. So props to you iTunes for continually taking money from me.
Now the debate is, do I want to go to the Augustana concert...I think I do...I need to go look between the couch cushions for loose change to feed this addiction. I'm also accepting donations. You can make your check directly out to me if you'd like to help support my music addiction ;)
P.S.--The Indelible Grace concert Sunday night was phenomenal. Matthew Smith and all of the artists who are part of the Indelible Grace project are truly talented individuals. And someday I will learn how to play the pedal steel guitar....right after I master the Kazoo.

New Music!
Dave Barnes' new CD came out this past week. Believe me, this guy is good. He's got a fabulous voice and intriguing lyrics. In concert he's incredibly entertaining--a great performer and absolutely, flat-out hilarious! I saw him a few months ago at The Social (Probably my favorite concert venue...intimate feeling, up and coming acts, cheap tickets) with Matt Wertz, another particular favorite of mine. Wertz and Barnes are friends and tour together from time to time. I was a little skeptical as to how good the concert was going to be...but it was incredible! They performed each other's songs together and cracked hilarious jokes throughout the night. Anyhow, iTunes is selling Dave Barnes new CD, "Me and You and The World" for just $5.99 for a limited time. You can't beat that deal. Great music for a great price. Go check it out. Like, I'm not joking. Seriously. Go download it. (And then write me precious little notes about my fabulous taste in music. It'll be good for you. And me. Thanks.)
